AMD-ATI, uno de los principales fabricantes de GPU dedicadas, ha liberado parte del código de sus controladores para los procesadores de última generación R600 y R700.

De todos es sabido, el gran avance técnico y social que el software libre está aportando a nuestra sociedad. Pero a pesar de los avances y esfuerzos de la comunidad para aportar controladores libres, en el caso de la aceleración gráfica, a día de hoy, todavía estamos atados a los controladores privativos de Nvidia y AMD-ATI. No obstante, AMD-ATI, parece estar tomando un rumbo muy diferente al de su competidor Nvidia.

En Febrero de este mismo año, AMD liberaba parcialmente la documentación de sus chips R500, R400 y R300 dando paso a que los desarrolladores Open Source crearan un controlador Mesa con aceleración OpenGL para toda la familia de aceleradoras Radeon X1000.

Siguiendo esta política de liberación de código, AMD-ATI, anunciaba hace unos días, que pronto tendríamos las especificaciones de los nuevos chips R600 y R700, es decir, los chips que gobiernan las gráficas de las familias Radeon 2000, 3000 y 4000.

Hasta el momento todo el trabajo en la creación de drivers para las gráficas de AMD-ATI recaía directamente sobre los desarrolladores de código abierto, pero parece que en esta ocasión será la propia AMD-ATI quien prepare un código específico GPL.

El problema que yo le veo a esto es que dentro de las series basicas, las que son con la dichosa coletilla 50 (X1950 por ejemplo) estan vendidas :(

Lamento decirlo, pero es que aun no he conseguido hacerlas funcionar ni la mitad de bien que funciona mi 9200 mobile, pero esperare a que se consiga algo con estas...
